Fleet, the executive officer to Colonel Henry H. ‘Hap’ Arnold in charge of planning instruction at Army Air Service schools, was concerned about training pilots at 34 fields in the United States; setting up an experimental airmail service was far from his mind. Denomination commemorative airmail stamp shown above, at the right (Sc. #C49), was issued on August 1, 1957 to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the United States Air Force (U.S. Army Air Corps). The design features a B-52 Stratofortress and three F-104 Starfighters. Air Mail was established as a new class of mail service by the United States Post Office Department (POD) on May 15, 1918, with the inauguration of the Washington–Philadelphia–New York route. Special postage stamps were issued for use with this service. Air Mail Pilot’s Coat and Helmet. James Edgerton flew the mail from Philadelphia to Washington during the first scheduled air mail flight on May 15, 1918. He wore this helmet and coat during that flight. Edgerton left the Army in 1919 and became the Chief of Flying for the U.S.
